Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
His underwear is hanging on the lamp.
His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair,
And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp.
His workbook is wedged in the window,
His sweater’s been thrown on the floor.
His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV,
And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door.
His books are all jammed in the closet,
His vest has been left in the hall.
A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed,
And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall.
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
Donald or Robert or Willie or–
Huh? You say it’s mine? Oh, dear,
I knew it looked familiar!

I can’t visualize a messier room than this one, however, I can see that the host feels quite at home. That’s enough.

  22. RR Ludwig says:

The Messy Room is a good poem that uses alot of imagery. It is a very descriptive poem that describes a boy’s room as very messy. It is not a very intellectually deep poem and i kinda like that because it is easier to understand.

  23. Amber says:

Hello I think this poem is equivelent to my house. I think it has alot of reasoning in it. And alot of humor. It also makes me think of my room. I can also relate to it alot. I think anyone like Fergus Wong is crazy not to get it! It is so funny! It made me laugh so badly my throat hurts.

it’s a great poem. it is simple and describes most teen aged boy’s room.

  108. Kimberly says:

I feel like this poem is being taken at face value when it actually sjould not be. This poem is a mtaphor for times when people, economic entities and even governments create problems in society, i.e. they create a mess, and then they point fingers and blame everyone but themselves.

Also, I think the poem speaks to the concept of judging yourself before you judge others. Often times we are quick to point out the short comings of others while failing to recognize the same faults/ shortcomings in our own lives.

  109. nick says:

this is the number one poem? how lack luster…

  110. Torjia Callaham says:

This is a cool and funny poem. I liked it alot

  111. rozzylou says:

Autumn leaves are falling and they don’t make a sound,
gently swirling softly until they reach the ground.
Colours will amaze you, Oranges, Yellows and Reds,
making homes for creatures among the flower beds.
Winter breezes blowing will leave the trees quite bare,
but the colours of the Autumn will stay and linger there. To remind us of the Summer when all was warm and green and all of natures splendours again in Springtime can be seen. I LIKED THE IDEA OF A POEM CALLED MESSY ROOM ITS AN IMAGINATIVE TITLE AN ORIGINAL.

  112. rozzylou says:

Autumn leaves are falling and they don’t make a sound,

  113. sammy says:

that was a great poem sounds a loy like my room

  114. bob says:

this is meant more for the organizers of this site, with no offense intended for the author or anything. I liked this poem, but does it really belong in the top 40?

  115. Brittany says:

I luv the poem! It sounds like a dog house.

  116. aatish says:

this poem is simple and subtle..a little strange for a poem but then thats the beauty of it..The innocence that this poem exudes would appeal to every person whose own room remains ina frenzy 24/7 and does not give a damn about it…callousness is away of life isnt it?

  117. betty says:

    Dear Shel,
I love poems and love writting them. But this one is the best i ever heard. Well i”ll show you a poem i wrote
    Halloween Night
    On halloween night

I saw all kinds of things
I even saw a witch sing

    My cousin Jake
    Got a stomach ach

  125. jason says:

these sounds just like my room

  126. Ben Mayer says:

I think this poem is really good and it gives me someones elses view on how my room is most of the time. I love it!

  127. d-twizzle says:

this poem is very intriguing… although it excentuates a messy room it does use common material from every day life

  128. amy says:

well, this poem is not very enticing. it’s all about messiness, who cares about that?
    i don’t see why it’s so great.

  129. Claire says:

I really didn’t like this poem. Not one bit. Though it might be enjoyable for small children. I really don’t see how it got to number one.

  130. Abby says:

I dont care what anyone says about this poem, I LOVED it! I used it for my reading class and got an A. Thank you sara from the USA!! PLEASE only post comments about the poem! AMERICA ROCKS!!!

  131. Philip Nash says:

This is a mildly amusing but certainly not a brillaint poem. The theme of untidiness is common and has been exploited with greater finesse than is shown here.

  132. Celeste Yeung says:

This poem is great, it’s not too long nor too short.

  133. Anon says:

this guy’s lame. i bet he actually viewed his own poem a quater of a million times just to get it ranked. what a joke. this guy would be lucky to one day just be Bronzestein.

  141. artie archie says:

This poem was is one of the great poems Shel Silverstein has writen, he was a great author.

  142. Fred says:

It was helpful to me for my project on Portrey. I had to find two poems that had something in common and this one matched perfectly to another one I had. Thanks!

  143. laurence says:

    good
    helpful

  144. Kev says:

This poem really touched me, It describes life and is simple to understand.

  145. GJB says:

This poem is different from others. It shows that things can be enjoyable and interesting even if it’s simple. Simple things can be beautiful. A poem doesn’t have to squeeze your mind to the fullest to be considered a good poem.

  146. Lindsey says:

I think everybody is looking way too deep in Shel’s poetry. If the reader wants to put in their intrepretation, that’s great but that doesn’t mean Shel put in “hidden meanings”. He was a whimsical and in this case CHILDREN’s poet although open minded adults can also enjoy his work. However, they shouldn’t expect Shel to have morals to all his poem, they are simply fun and meant to be silly.

  147. Mel says:

OH canada our home and native land, true patriot love in all our sons command with glowing hearts we see thee rise the true north strong and free from far and wide oh canada we stand one guard for thee god keep our land glorious and free oh canada we stand on guard for thee oh canada we stand on guard for thee… you suck AMERICA

  148. Megan says:

I loved it it tells how my life and how I act LOVE IT!!!!!

  149. nicole says:

that was a great poem…it was good because it does pertain to life and it also realtes to a teens room…..im not very familiar with this poet but i have heard of him before….great job Shel Silverstein …

  150. sara says:

ok, this comment section is for people to comment on the poems and their meanings…not for some retarded people to type anything that comes to their mind. shel silverstein was a brilliant poet and all the comments that are insulting him are disgraces. maybe next time you should try to keep your faggit comments to yourself.

  151. John says:

Ok… you people are retarted. This poem is rather funny and entertaining. If you were to know MORE about this poet (or of anything for that matter you dumb-asses) you would realize that this poem is also a metephore which pretains to everyday life. Silverstein wants the reader to realize that dont be to quick to judge or critize others. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, STOP WRITTING STUPID COMMENTS YOU STUPID TWO-TIMING-SKANKS!

  152. Alex says:

OMG! this sounds like my room, except i dont have as lizard named ed in my bed! LOL!

  153. Hattie says:

your poems are great! i wish you could write one just for me.

  154. ker says:

i thought shel was like a two year olds author! how can anyone stand the childish garbage? could it be possible that the 21st century is listening to this because it takes no effort to understand this type of poetry?! wanna read this crap? go to a children’s library (and i am prepared to have my head bit off-but this is america-freedom of speach people…)

  155. Hun Sihead says:

cool, me love pome. sroy can’t spak english wel

  157. Shaina says:

All of your poems are good but I like this one the best!

  158. Velcro says:

haha the person who wanted “comments 36 & 37” off must’ve gotten them off… whats ironic is that now that persons comment is 37… And for those who are referring to how “she” is a good poet… you obviously dont know what your talking about cuz Shel Silverstein is a guy!! And someone said he should be hit for writing this poem… well he’s dead… and if you dont like the poem get over it and look into counseling for your aggression… This poem is funny… reminds me of HIS other poem..”Sick” Shel writes about things other people can relate to… Not everything has to talk about the bad things in life… Alot of his poems talk about things that happen everyday or just funny twists that expand your imagination… Good Day!!

  159. Nida says:

Man this poems so cool it so funny in the ending and so amazingly put up. All i can say is HATS OFF to SHEL SILVERSTEIN!!!!!!

YEAH, to all those people that say “mhmm, this is a poem about a very disorganized individual who keeps a very messy living area.” yeah….DUH isnt that like the most obvious thing ever? and the funny part is they try to make themselves sound all intelligent by using more syllables. ugh.

  164. Matt says:

I found this poem was excellent, especially, at the end. I felt it was funny at the end, maybe because my room is a mess too.

Sometimes we are too busy minding other people’s business/lives that we have forgotten to reflect on our own. Be slow to make judgements; you might end up looking like the fool!

  178. Christina says:

I am a big fan of silverstein’s poems they are great. It lightens up the mood his poetry, brings smiles to faces, and sometimes gives us good laughs! His poems aren’t as “serious” when we compare them to others but it is still great. Even if you don’t like poetry you can like Silverstein’s work they are very comical and great of course! I have Falling Up and A Light in the Attic. These poems are good for people of all ages.

First, the person who wrote comment 10 should have theirs taken off, but as far as the actual poem goes i find it quite good, though SHel didn’t do his usual over-exaggeration.

  184. tasha says:

I completely agree with the whole “glass house” thing. Silverstein didn’t always have a deeper meaning behind all his poems, but I believe this one definitely did. His poems are great for any age and I believe this poem was a funny way of getting across the point of not judging anything because you may be exactly that which you are describing.

  185. India says:

i think that this is a very funny poem so keep it up.

  186. Evoraeis says:

  210. Tiani says:

Shel Silverstien has such a non-rhyming volcabulary list that has such small, but discriptive words. He is very amazing with all of his work and poems. Another one of his poems I like is the pencil one, and the snowball one. Thank you.
