A Thought went up my mind today —
That I have had before —
But did not finish — some way back —
I could not fix the Year —
Nor where it went — nor why it came
The second time to me —
Nor definitely, what it was —
Have I the Art to say —
But somewhere — in my Soul — I know —
I’ve met the Thing before —
It just reminded me — ’twas all —
And came my way no more —
Seems as though the poet thinks of her own mind as a chimney that takes in thoughts endlessly. The thought that she is talking about in this particular piece is the one she has had before and is quite familiar with. But she does not remember the time, place, or context of the very thought. But there seems to be some kind of familiarity and mutual understanding between this thought and the poet herself. Adding to that, she simply says that the thought almost touched her fingertips but then, it didn’t touch her at all…
When I read it to my third graders. I interpretated that she had a thought about something that had happened in her life before, but throughout the years, she had forgotten most of the event that took place. However, she was sure that something indeed happened. It was just a dream. Some students suggested that she may have had a dream or a dajavu:)
