The day is cold, and dark, and dreary
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.
My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.
Be still, sad heart! and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.
I like it when I first read it.
this poem is an epic masterpiece! we should be optimistic about our entire life! there’s still a bright path outside there! use your inextinguishable flashlight well on the right streets! Cheers!
learned this poem in English class in 1933. I have repeated it thousands of times with great pleasure. I love the last stanza.
A group made a song from this poem. It’s called Rainy Days from Late Night Alumni. The singer’s tone is haunting but its also optimistic. Check it out!
This was a very deep poem. We thought it was somewhat similar to “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening”. It was touching and felt like a sad poem.

What memories!! 50 years ago in 7th grade we read and had to recite from memory this poem. At our 45 HS reunion we were trying to see who could remember the most poems from our 7th grade class. All I could remember was “the days are dark and dreary.” Thank you
