    Whitman was saying: like a river that is nearing the end of its course, people get stronger (larger, wider, deeper, faster)at the end of their lives…the longer they have run, the more they carry.

    This poem to me it means the memory of the older and wiser people that have passed away and are kept in memories…. so many that it spreads like the sea.
