Here come real stars to fill the upper skies,
And here on earth come emulating flies,
That though they never equal stars in size,
(And they were never really stars at heart)
Achieve at times a very star-like start.
Only, of course, they can’t sustain the part.

i love this poem. Its using fireflies to symbolize symbolism and using stars to symbolize the real thing. He’s stating that symbolism is limited in meaning just as the fireflies are limited in their attempt to “emulate” larger stars.

I’m not a literary critic or anything, but I enjoy this poem. I first saw it on the New York subway as part of its “Poetry in Motion” series. I like its simple AAABBB rhyme scheme, its Frostian iambic pentameter, and its easy, objective stance. That’s all.
