One of my wishes is that those dark trees,
So old and firm they scarcely show the breeze,
Were not, as ’twere, the merest mask of gloom,
But stretched away unto th eedge of doom.

I should not be withheld but that some day
into their vastness I should steal away,
Fearless of ever finding open land,
or highway where the slow wheel pours the sand.

I do not see why I should e’er turn back,
Or those should not set forth upon my track
To overtake me, who should miss me here
And long to know if still I held them dear.

They would not find me changed from him the knew–
Only more sure of all I though was true.

this comment is to Rocky Balboa ….. i don’t understand how you can say poets have no life because most of the times poetry is a passion for the poet and it helps them get through the rough times and ther life and it help ther people who read it and if you think money meands more than loving what you do then good for you i hope you just have a wonderful time living a boring life trying to become rich

  3. Rocky Balboa says:

in my opinion, robert frost could have been a little more specific. I mean, what is this poem about? I can’t even read it! Maybe its my dyslexia or maybe its just Robert Frost truly stinks!. What kind of person would choose to be a poet. In my opinion, poets have no life. No life at all. They get paid diddly-squat, and it takes them 2 months to make a poem!. They have to carry their little dinky notebook all around in case they have an idea. What will they write about, a drunk guy throwing up? Poets definatly have no life. Robert Frost was definatly a teachers pet when he was a kid.I bet he even got bullied! He was probably 30 before he got a girlfriend. Total Nerd. All poets are nerds probably, except the cool ones.

There are many schloars that think Robert Frost was Bipolar. This poem, so beautifully sad, relates to me the longing to be free from the pain that so often accompanies depression and suicidal thoughts.

  5. Princesa says:

IM NOT SURE WEATHER HE IS THINKING ABOUT SUICIDE OR RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME… I THINK THAT THE TREES ARE MEMORIES AND EXPERIENCES, THEY ARE THE REASONS WHY HE WANTS TO RUN AWAY/COMMIT SUICIDE(WHICH EVER IT MIGHT BE). HE WISHED THAT THOSE MEMORIES WOULD STOP HIM FROM HIS DECISION. INSTEAD OF PUSHING HIM TO IT.

HES GOING TO COMMIT SUICIDE/RUN AWAY “INTO THEIR WASTNESS I SHOULD STEAL WAY,”
HE DOESN’T CARE WERE HE GOES AS LONG AS HE GETS AWAY FROM THE “TREES”
HE FINDS NO REASON TO TURN BACK, WONDERS IF HELL BE MISSED BLAH BLAH BLAH ALL THE TYPICAL THOUGHT OF SUICIDE AND/OR RUNNING AWAY…

THE ONLY THING THAT GETS ME IS THAT THEY WILL FIND HIM THE SAME AS B4, SO I DONT KNOW IF HES GONE OUT TO “FIND HIMSELF” OR THAT NO ONE WILL LOOK FOR HIM SO IN REALITY HE WAS RIGHT TO COMMIT SUICIDE…

    PRINCSEA…MUAH*

I would like to comment on G.Kats’s comment, you go! Robert Frost is a wonderful poet. All those stupid people that cant get over them selve’s, that think that he was on crack. You guys are the one’s on crack, meth, needles, or whatever you are on these days its hard to keep up, anyways, like you said G.Kats, you all just need to stick with the comic’s in the newspaper or if thats too complicated, maybe you should go get yourself a picture book, but then again, that could be just as hard as anything else for you.

    Thanks for your time,
Look for me on World Of Warcraft,

  7. G.Kats says:

Frost was one of our greatest writers. you idiots who think he was on crack or drugs are showing your lack of literacy. why not just stick to reading the funny papers… after all you may be able to follow them.that is if they aren’t too complicated.

  8. Emily says:

I beleive that Robert Frost was too depressed to be a friend of maryjane, bu deffenently a crack head on a meth benge.Hopefully no one is that sad.

  9. joe says:

    its a really good peom

  10. trevi says:

I felt this poem was expressing how nobody should give up even if the time seems right and the world seems scary. The tall firm trees shouldn’t intimidate anyone who sees them.

  11. janet says:

i think its an interesting poem beacause it expresess many diffrent feelings.

  12. naeem says:

Robert frost’s fascination with nature tallies with that of Wordsworth.Frost finds in nature a more favourable ideology and a teacher. This outlook expresses the views of a modern man who continues to see in nature the same attraction which the romantic poets experienced.

  13. naeem says:

  14. Smokey McPot says:

Robert Frost is the man we smoked all the time

  15. Bob says:

Wow, when Robert Frost wrote this sonnet, he must of been on crack. Firstly, he was no where near the age of dying. Why then, in the poem was he running out of time (sand pouring). Other than that, poem is cool

  16. Ann English Teacher says:

I would like to comment on Hardwin’s comment. It is obviously a joke, and I’m sure Mr. Frost would have been amused; unfortunately, students looking for intelligent life online may get sucked into it.

  17. brendan says:

I think that the first stanza is about his memories becoming old and unchangable. The second stanza is about his time running out because the last line is like an hourglass, the sand pouring down. Then he realizes he doesn’t need to change his memories, and the last stanza is saying he won’t change.

  18. ED JAMES says:

THE DARK,VAST TREES MIGHT REPRESENT THE BODY OF IDEAS,
EXPERIENCE,SENSATION AVAILABLE TO THE BOLD PILGRIM…
THE JOURNEY INTO THE JOURNEY… THE EDGE OF DOOM MIGHT BE THE BOUNDRIES OF SANITY AND THE INVITATION TO FOLLOW
    IS STILL AVAILABLE…….JOY,JOY,JOY…

  19. Brandi says:

i think its a really good poem every time i get online i read this poem!

  20. Hardwin A-Davies says:

“There is something in this poem or something that this poem points to that resonates here. In spite of the unending cavalcade of life the author points to stillness where everything blends into a sense of oneness and grace. In a way, which is hard to express, the trees & I share something at the core of our being that I can’t quite seem to get a grasp of but that I recognise unequivocally. So that though I may gallop off into a plethora of scenes throughout life something in the magnificence of the trees causes me to pause and pulls me back to a place that is my undoing.” Re: The Sound of Trees & Into my Own.
