He’d have given me rolling lands,
Houses of marble, and billowing farms,
Pearls, to trickle between my hands,
Smoldering rubies, to circle my arms.
You- you’d only a lilting song,
Only a melody, happy and high,
You were sudden and swift and strong-
Never a thought for another had I.

He’d have given me laces rare,
Dresses that glimmered with frosty sheen,
Shining ribbons to wrap my hair,
Horses to draw me, as fine as a queen.
You- you’d only to whistle low,
Gayly I followed wherever you led.
I took you, and I let him go-
Somebody ought to examine my head!

  2. Joey says:

I love this poem! Dorothy Parker was really smart and insightful. I think that the world would be a better place if everybody made decisions like she says that she did.
P.S. I didn’t know that you could spell ‘you’ with an ‘h’ in it.

  3. Paigey says:

that is one of the greatest poems i’ve ever read personally…

  4. Fili says:

We always prefer the bad boy over the one who gives us everything we want. What fun is there in getting all you want? You have to have a challenge, or there’s no attraction.

  5. Irina says:

I personally luv this poem. Now I’m not one of those dorkyish people that post about poems often. But this poem is an exception, i think it has a great message. When youh realli luv someone than nothing can stand in the way.

  6. Brooke says:
