There was a rose that faded young;
I saw its shattered beauty hung
Upon a broken stem.
I heard them say, “What need to care
With roses budding everywhere?”
I did not answer them.
There was a bird, brought down to die;
They said, “A hundred fill the sky-
What reason to be sad?”
There was a girl, whose lover fled;
I did not wait, the while they said,
“There’s many another lad.”

This poem is simple and beautifully written. I think that its meaning is pretty straight forward. Our society is self centered and tends to overlook things that don’t apply to us. I love this poem because it speaks the truth.
I like this poem a lot.
I never really thought about the social context though. It’s interesting, but not surprising. Human nature never really changes, most people (including myself..) are kinda self-centered.
To me this poem is very much about how everyone stands alone in grief; the worth of something that is lost, is only known and understood by the one who lost it.
I dont get how its funny? i think its very sad poem:(
“Just because something like death or love is commonplace, doesn’t make the experience ununique to the individual experiencing it.”
I would have to say that is perfectly phrased, and would like to thank you for posting it…this might seem lame but after reading that, the whole poem seems to mean more to me.
I don’t know if anyone has actually done research on Mrs.Parker, but i feel that this poem is about her brother who died on the Titanic. maybe she felt that no one care when he died, and that everyone was just like it is just another person. she suffered two tradedies as a young woman and probaly felt all alone.
thats not right it does not matter how many things are in the world there Gods creation you rock
