A book is compared to a ship because it will bring you anywhere you want to go without the use of money.
A book is compared to a horse because after reading page 1, you are jumping to the next page just like a prancing horse.
A book is compared to a cart because a book can carry your soul to another dimension of life like a place of fantasy.

what is the imagery in this poem ?
Very simple.. very true, and very beautiful. There is no frigate like a book. Absolutely, it is the only means that can take you ages back in time, and ages ahead in the future. As a magical carpet it carries you to the wonders of the far lost worlds, through the dark jungle with its old trees, above the golden shore of the unknown islands, to the mysterious lights of tomorrow’s worlds…
I really love this poem, figate, what a great word eh?
I had to study this for an honors lit class. The second half of the poem refers to a “frugal chariot.” What a way to depict the physical body in comparison to the mind and soul. Our bodies are frugal because they don’t hold the treasure of creativity. Also, the beauty of the physical appearance pales when compared to the work that comes from the heart.
My ten year old daughter asked me about my favorite poem. We found the poem on this site and here are our thoughts about it.
There is no frigate like a book
It is true that there is no ship or any way of travel, better than a book to take us to far away places. And a page of poetry can send us lands away too. Just by reading, we can imagine ourselves in other universes, under the sea, or on the soils of other countries.
Even the poorest person may read about distant places without having to pay a fare to get there. Is not a book or a poem a cheap way to send our mind and heart any where it wants to go.
