I have been hiking and backpacking for 47 years. I graduated from Air Force Survival School. (SERE). I know from experience what gear you need in your 72 hour kit to be safe and comfortable in most conditions.
Why does the book start with automobile survival kits?
Being stranded in your car is the most likely case. Most people have enough things in their home to prepare for survival. Why not have it with you?
What is unique about your Go Bag?
- Many bug out bags are too heavy. It is obvious they were designed by people who never went backpacking. I lighten the survival bag by omitting items that are not needed. The weight of survival bag design is only 25-30 pounds including food and water. Because it is light, you will be able to walk longer and faster if you do not have a car. It has everything you will need to stay three days in the wilderness with enough food. If you needed to, you could stretch the food for over a week.
- This bugout kit is inexpensive. You may have most of the clothes you need. Your only expenses are a sleeping bag, tent and pack. I chose the most inexpensive options for you.
- I often spend 3 days in the wilderness with similar gear. I know it will work both in the wilderness, city and every place in between.
- This bug out kit does not include military gear. Military gear is designed for a different use and is too heavy. There are better and cheaper alternatives.
I will most likely be in a shelter. Why do I need a bug out bag?
Many shelters take three days to get organized. During that time, you will have your own food, clothes and bedding. A tent can provide privacy indoors.
What is different about your book?
I describe every piece of clothing and other gear you will need in your bug out bag. I explain options for everything giving advantages and disadvantages. I give you information to make informed choices from simple options.
Why only five seconds?
This is the worst case. If you prepare to bug out in five seconds, you can make other preparations if you have extra time.
You make it sound so easy!
It is easy. In the book, I recommend easy practice to become familiar with your go bag.
