Hanging a Bird Feeder

The best place to hang a bird feeder is in a sheltered location with southeastern exposure, as birds like to feed in the sun and out of the wind. Birds also prefer not to have any obstructions over their feeding areas, so they can easily see predators.

A squirrel baffle (sold separately) keeps squirrels from jumping onto the bird feeder from above.

Discouraging Squirrels and Raccoons

When hanging your bird feeder from a tree branch, try and locate it at least 12 feet from any tree trunk or limb and at least 4 feet up from the ground. This will prevent squirrels from either jumping from the tree or up for the ground onto the feeder. If you're hanging a feeder off the line, make sure the line is at least 8 feet long, with the feeder suspended at least 4 feet above the ground or snow. You should also use a very thin wire, such as piano wire.

When pole mounting the feeder, make sure the pole is at least 5-1/2 feet in length. This will allow you to place the pole approximately 1 foot into the ground and still keep the bottom of the feeder 4 feet off the ground. You may also want to add a squirrel baffle, such as the Perky-Pet squirrel baffle, which can be hung above or pole mounted below the feeder. And to keep raccoons at bay, try placing a 6-inch diameter stovepipe that's at least 2 feet long around the mounting pole. They'll find it difficult to climb the thicker stovepipe.
