From the Manufacturer:
Nothing sends moles and gophers hurrying away faster than the penetrating sonic pulses emitted from Sweeney’s Sonic Spike. When placed in the ground and activated, sonic pulses penetrate the soil every 30 seconds, emitting a sound which is highly irritating to moles and gophers. Because these underground rodents are virtually blind they are exceptionally sensitive to sound and vibrations.
To use, make a pilot hole in the ground with a wooden or steel rod. Next, insert the Spike into the soil so that the cap is flush with the ground to avoid tripping hazards and the chance of hitting it with a lawnmower.
The Sonic Spike comes equipped with a convenient, removable battery sleeve for trouble-free battery replacement. The Spike will work for 4 – 6 months on 3 “D” alkaline batteries. The Spike must be used continuously for 7-14 days before ground rodents start to move away from the area.
Effectiveness of the product depends largely upon soil type. Moist clay is the best conductor of sound; dry, sandy or peat soil does not conduct the sonic waves as easily.

How do Sonic Spikes work to repel moles?
Moles and gophers are virtually blind and extremely sensitive to sound and vibrations. Sweeney’s sonic spikes are designed to repel underground rodents by emitting a penetrating sound which is irritating to moles and gophers. This method encourages moles to leave the property, and the sonic spikes continue to discourage return visits.
How long does it take to repel moles when using Sonic Spikes?
Typically, spikes must be used continuously for 7-14 days before ground rodents start to move away from the area.
