Editorial Reviews:
Synopsis
The former Velvet Underground leader is caught live in concert last August at Montreal's Theatre St. Denis, performing all 14 songs from his critically acclaimed album of last year, "New York.", The incontrovertible power of Lou Reed's New York album -- truly his most exciting LP since his mid-'70s heyday -- translates effortlessly into his most exciting live recording ever, edging even the supreme majesty of Rock 'n' Roll Animal in terms of visceral energy and viscous guitar. Recorded live in Montreal on August 13, 1989, The New York Album is precisely that, the entire studio album performed live by a basic quartet of Reed, Michael Rathke (guitar), Rob Wasserman (bass), and Robert Medici (drums). It's not much to look at -- a Sylvia Reed stage set that steps straight out of "Dirty Boulevard" is starkly lit and sparsely decorated, while the musicians themselves don't do much more than play. The songs tell their own stories, though, occasionally extending beyond their studio counterparts and expanding past the pertinent rage that fuelled the original recordings. "Last Great American Whale," "Dime Store Mystery," and, most of all, a thermonuclear "Strawman" are all noticeably superior to the album versions, while the guitars have a rawness that matches Reed's occasionally imperfect vocal. Comparatively weak takes on "Endless Cycle" and "Xmas in February," then, are readily forgivable and an absolute triumph surely suffers only from its video-only availability; it really should be on CD as wel
