Synopsis
This volume is a report on the excavations of the Paionian-Macedonian stronghold city, thought to be Bylazora (the largest city of the Paionians, according to Polybius). The Texas Foundation for Archaeological & Historical Research (TFAHR) presents the results of 5 seasons of excavations. Featured articles include: - a history of the Paionians; - an examination of the ancient Greek and Latin sources regarding Bylazora; - a description of the finds from the acropolis, including a propylon, a casemate wall, a city gate, and the remains of a Doric order building; - a preliminary typology of the ceramics; - an introduction to the latest discovery of what might be the sacred area or royal residence of Bylazora. The excavations at Bylazora are shedding light on the nature of ancient Greek, Macedonian and Paionian cultural exchanges. TFAHR excavations are producing evidence of a rapid and early Hellenization at Paionian Bylazora.
