A Q&A with Author JS Taylor
Q: Did you ever expect Spotlight to be so successful?
Taylor: No I didn’t. I’ve been absolutely blown away by how well the books have done. I also get a lot of mail from fans, saying how much they like the books, and that means more to me, than words can easily express.
Q: You give readers ‘secret scenes’ from your characters’ pasts. What gave you that idea?
Taylor: When you create a character, you usually do a lot of writing that no-one ever sees. I thought it would be fun for readers to have the chance to read past scenes, which shape a character’s present. My readers can also look at some of the pictures I used to inspire locations and other things in the books.
Q: You’ve been compared to Fifty Shades. Do you think your books are similar?
Taylor: Spotlight series was actually turned down by Random House, on the basis they might pose a threat to Fifty Shades – which I guess is a great compliment! EL James is a total heroine of mine, and I love her books, so I’m sure I’ve been influenced. But I’d like to think I have my own style.
Q: How has your background influenced your writing?
Taylor: I’ve been really lucky to have worked as a journalist for twelve years. So I’ve had privileged access to a lot of glamorous settings which I use in my writing. I also get insider celebrity gossip which helps me understand what goes on behind the scenes!
Q: What book are you reading currently?
Taylor: I usually have about three on the go. I’m halfway through Beautiful Disaster, and I’ve fallen head over heels for Travis. I’ve also started City of Bones by Cassandra Clare which is a great fantasy read. And I’m finishing the last Hunger Games book.
Q: What do you have planned now Spotlight is finished?
Taylor: I have lots of exciting projects. Next up is another adult romance series, set in the music industry. I also have a background in historic research, so I’m writing a historical romance which I’m really excited about.
