From the Introduction Palgrave's Golden Tr e a sur y, Storm's Hausbuch deutscher Lyrik, Will Vesper's Die Ernte illustrate the point in question. Each age will compile its own anthology, My aim is to make the work of the great German lyric poets accessible to our students in adequate selections. To keep the book within proper compass it was necessary to practice the principle of exclusion. I excluded not only Gustav Schwab and Wilhelm Muller, but also the genial Justinus Kerner, not only Bodenstedt and Scheffel, but also J. G. Fischer and Paul Heyse. For the modern period from Liliencron on I had to exclude the poetae minores , or the book would have burst all bounds and the student have been bewildered by a list of names. No defense is needed for including Liliencron, Dehmel, Nietzsche, George, and Rilke: they do not only stand first, their verse constitutes the lyric poetry of this period. I include three poems of Hofmannsthal to prepare the student for George. The influence of Arno Holz and his theories are discussed in the introduction where I quote sufficient examples of his Mittelachsenlyrik. The reader desiring access to the host of lesser lyrists from 1885 on is referred to the excellent anthology of Hans Benzmann (Reclam) and that of Hans Bethge (Hesse & Becker). From the older poets still living I include three poems from Lulu von Strauss and Torney. It is my belief that the title of Germany's greatest woman poet will ultimately go to her. I do not include the work of the present generation: it is too early to arrive at a satisfactory evaluation. We shall have to wait for the winnowing process of time.
