Pp. 319, steel engraved frontis portrait of the author after a crayon drawing by Rowse. Publisher's original blue-green pebble cloth, elaborately blind-stamped on the front and rear covers, spine lettered in gilt, 16 mo. This is the third book published by Thoreau; it contains the first published portrait of the author. The volume opens with a biographical sketch of Thoreau by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Borst (A3.1.a) states that 1558 copies of the first edition were printed but only 1500 copies were bound and sold. See also Allen, p. 15. From the library of Donald H.
