Dickinson (1830-1886) spent a reclusive life in Amherst, Massachusetts; even people who knew her had no idea of the extent of her work. Her first collection was published after her death in 1890. The sale volume is a later printing of the first Modern Library edition from 1948, number 25 in the Modern Library series. Introduced by Conrad Aiken. Gray cloth boards with gold lettering on green block on front board and spine. Toledano #8 binding (used from 1939-1963) with Kent end pages. Binding tight and square, clean and bright with only minor bumping at top and bottom of spine; previous owner's label on front free end page. Unclipped dust jacket is a Toledano #8i (used from 1954 to 1959); 388 titles are listed on the reverse side. Clean and bright but wear at top and bottom of spine and extremities. Repairs and restorations have been made. 231 pages
