Inspirational sermons of the old time black preachers are here set down as poetry. The black artist , Aaron Douglas has made eight arresting interpretations. James Weldon Johnson, the author, in 1925 received the Spingarn Medal and in 1926 one of the Harmon awards for distinguished contributions to Black Culture. His autobiography, Along this Way, was published in 1933. He died in 1938.
