These poems were written by a young Negro slave in Boston in the last third of the eighteenth century and were generally well received at a time when even white women were not expected to be able to write such poems. Phillis Wheatley was brought from Africa to Boston as a slave in 1761, when she was probably about seven years old and was soon bought by John Wheatly, a respected tailor of Boston.
