Thomas Stearns Eliot era hijo de una familia de Nueva Inglaterra, cuyos origenes de emigrantes ingleses se remontan a aquellos puritanos que en el siglo XVII colonizaron esa region de Norteamerica. Sus lazos familiares le emparentan con presidentes americanos, rectores de Harvard y eruditos e intelectuales americanos. Su posterior adopcion de la ciudadania britanica, su conversion al catolicismo, su declaracion de clasicista en literatura, monarquico en politica y anglo-catolico en religion, cuestionaban la esencia misma de la identidad norteamericana, que se definia como republicana, protestante y opuesta al Viejo Mundo.La publicacion en 1922 de La tierra baldia marco un hito en la tradicion poetica anglonorteamericana. El poema se revelo como el documento revolucionario del experimentalismo de las vanguardias. Texto extrano y enigmatico, coleccion de fragmentos de diversa indole, escritos en siete lenguas, que se extiende a lo largo de distintas epocas y culturas, cuyas imagenes recurrentes articularon un nuevo lenguaje poetico. El ensamblaje en distintos estilos lirico, romance, elegia y epica, novela policiaca y gotica, de distintos metros y rimas, sus discontinuidades y yuxtaposiciones rompian los moldes y las formas tradicionales. El poema de Eliot traza el viaje del alma a traves del desierto de la ignorancia, del sufrimiento y de la sed de aspiraciones terrenales.
