The Return of the Left in Post-Communist States: Current Trends and Future Prospects (Studies of Communism in Transition)

Professors of international studies, political science, linguistics, and other fields examine the fortunes of the political left in Russia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, and Romania. Each of the six country studies explores how the left-wing parties, defined broadly to include any party which emerged originally out of Marxist ideological roots and which continues to have an interest in issues of social justice, have returned to the political stage since the demise of the Soviet Union. The volume finds that the left has been a resilient, and generally underestimated, force in post-communist states.
