Synopsis
In Oliver Twist Charles Dickens created a founding who finds himself at the mercy of a social order that disclaims any responsibility for the degrading poverty at its heart. As a pale, thin, 9-year-old orphan, Oliver is accepted as a member of perhaps the most famous pack of thieves in English literature, Fagin's gang of pickpockets and cutthroats, including the blithe Artful Dodger and the brutal Bill Sikes. This early work--published in 1838; Pickwick Papers is the only one of Dickens's novels to precede it--is already filled with the dazzling variety of colorful characterizations and strong sense of place that Dickens is best known for, and its unparalleled depiction of London's dark underworld of poverty and crime still delivers a powerful shock of recognition to modern readers. This edition features 24 full-page b&w line drawings by George Cruikshank, and is printed from the classic Gadshill Edition of the work of Dickens, incorporating a text carefully corrected by the author in 1867-68.
