Synopsis
Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South is set in Milton, North of England. As industrialization is changing the city Margaret Hale is forced to leave her tranquil rural south for the north where she witnesses the brutal world. During the clashes between the employers and the workers Hale sympathizes with the poor, idealizing their courage and tenacity. Mr. Thornton a cotton mill owner belonging to the upper class has much disdainful for his workers.
