Luke, xvi. 9. / say unto you, make yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness, that, when ye foil, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. There is something, at first sight, startling in this recommendation. It seems to prescribe such an application of wealth, and of ill-gotten wealth too, as may bribe the justice of heaven, and secure for the sons of Avarice and Extortion, an eternal portion with the spirits of the righteous. Make yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness. Are we, then, to purchase with our treasures an entrance into the mansions of the blest? Is our wealth to surround us with friends, and patrons, and mediators, who can command the everlasting gates to fly open for our reception? It is scarcely possible to listen to the bare mention of such doctrine, without fancying that, at the same time, we hear the indignant rebuke of the Apostle, Thy money perish with thee; because thou hast thought that the gift of God might be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter, for thy heart is not right in the sight of God And yet, monstrous as the notion is, it probably may find a secret reception in many a heart, that would shrink from the shame of an open profession of it. The thoughts of future retribution will sometimes force themselves on those who are practically living without God in the world. The spirit will wake, at intervals, from its bewildering vanities, as it were from " the fierce vexation of a dream." And, in those intervals, a voice is heard to whisper, that, after the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eye, and the pride of life, have had their day, there are certain everlasting habitations to be entered.
