Malaria and the red cell 2: Proceedings of the Second Workshop on Malaria and the Red Cell, held in Ann Arbor, Michigan, October 24, 1988 (Progress in clinical and biological research)

Presents the results of recent studies on malarial parasite/host cell interactions. Addresses immunologic aspects of malaria and results of chemotherapy, including antigenic determinants and immunity, drug action and resistance, and the action of free radicals. Specific topics covered include development of asexual erythrocytic malaria vaccines, role of ferriprotoporphyrin IX in choloroquine susceptibility and resistance in malaria, potential advantages of Plasmodium falciparum dihydrofolate-reductase thymidylate synthase, P. falciparum iron metabolism, parasite proteases and antimalarial activities of protease inhibitors, and possible roles for oxidants, through tumor necrosis factor, in malarial anemia.
