LAWS for Creations,
For strong artists and leaders—for fresh broods of teachers, and perfect
literats for America,
For noble savans, and coming musicians.

All must have reference to the ensemble of the world, and the compact truth of
the world;
There shall be no subject too pronounced—All works shall illustrate the
divine law of indirections.

What do you suppose Creation is?
What do you suppose will satisfy the Soul, except to walk free, and own no
superior?
What do you suppose I would intimate to you in a hundred ways, but that man or
woman is as good as God?
And that there is no God any more divine than Yourself?
And that that is what the oldest and newest myths finally mean?
And that you or any one must approach Creations through such laws?

Analysis, meaning and summary of Walt Whitman's poem Laws for Creations.

Jwan, we never see them chasing the others around because we never pay any attention.

Also, I fail to see why I should worship a cosmic zombie that is his own father.

This comment is for Jwan Lopez and any others who decide to read this. There are many possible answers to complicated questions such as evolution and when the earth was made. I am a devote christian, but believe in these things and many other controversial topics. First off….evolution. We are still evolving, and everything else is evolving, the only problem is that it is a very long process. When i mean long i mean over millions of years. We can find evidence in this such as natural selection and fossil records. For example, there are no more short-neck giraffes because long-neck giraffes because a)they have a more dominant trait and b)the short-neck giraffe was unable to survive in the environment it was in whilst the long-neck was not. These however are just part of a grand design, but I will address this later. The creation of the Earth has so much evidence that it is hard for me to comprehend how it could not be over 10 billion years old. First off, whos to say our time and God’s time are the same. if you seriously think about it, God’s time is eternity and who is to say his day is the same as ours. Also, archeologists and scientists can date back rocks and meteorites over billions of years. Most importantly, the Big Bang. If you believe in the Big Bang, you are most likely to believe the Earth was created 16 billion years ago. Anyway, I will address no argument on the Big Bang and assume everyone believes are at the least acknowledges it as a possibility. So, recent scientists and researches have determined to the thousandth of a millisecond back to the Big Bang. There is no other explanation of this amazing event to have occured unless someone or something sparked it off. That being an intelligent designer or God. Next, s homosexuality. I don’t like to address this subject because it effects peoples emotions, however, I would like to reduce the ignorance of some people. There is in fact a zoo in Africa that holds 2 gay vultures. They have researched with these animals and they both seem to hold a homosexual culture. If an egg is placed for them to care, they will both tend to it. if they are placed seperately with female vultures, they will not respond. And yes, they do try to reproduce. Now, with this evidence and the fact that 11% of the country is gay, how can you not agree that there are homosexuals. I tell you this, in my words, homosexuality is almost completely psychological. It involves ones environment and how they were raised as a child. For example if a ministers son is raised to live in a harsh environment where he is told that being gay is a sin and he will go to hell, on reaction of the son is to rebel, and become in fact gay. Also, this is only one reason. There is also more biological evidence that backs up certain gay qualities. But, Im not to familiar of the process, so if you wish to know more of your brain and the neuron, i advise you to take a psychology class. One more thing, being gay is also a peer pressure effect. Many teens I know become gay or experiment to be different, and I believe they are just aiding to the stereotypes people produce. One thing i will say though is I am sorry for posting this comment. I fully understand that this blog is for commenting on this poem, however i disagree with some of the comments Jwan made and refuse to just stand by. I will pray for all of you to find the answers to your questions, be it God or Science. Thankyou for your time.

Although Whitman has many Hebraic references, I feel like this poem is using “God” and “Creation” as a symbol for the macrocosm of existence and the fact that he uses the word “I” puts himself as the microcosm (observer). This poem asks significant questions about what it is to exist in the society we run in, whether in direction or no direction. I feel that this poem pays tribute to human existence in this society, and Whitman wrote this to wake people’s senses during the Industrialization era… to bring people out of the modern experience and into a deeper one. It is ignorant to say this poem is “Christian” and to determine Christianity as the right path is completely biased (especially since we live in a world of many diverse cultures, beliefs, religions, and philosophies. WAKE UP!). This poem isn’t meant for religion. It’s meant for spirituality. Spirituality is something we feel within and religion is a set of laws that guide’s the believer. Whitman creates a dualism of matter in laws in our society with spirit to ratify a new American dream. Personally, I believe that the ideas in this poem could exist if people in our society would open their eyes and hearts to the corruption that filters through our nation but is masked by the insanely material addictions our government is force feeding our blind brothers and sisters. We are all here NOW. Whitman provokes these questions for a reason. Find it within yourselves. Find meaning.

well im a firm beliver in christ and for all of you woh dont believe in christ but do believe in nothing or another god than please answer sone of these questions… of you believe in evloution when yall said that everything revolves into diffrent things and that we all came from monkey than why arnt we still revolving now? And for all of you who believe in homosexuality why dont you see animals going around chasing after the same sex? And finaly, for all of you woh dont believe in Jesus Christ How was this earth created and how did every thing get here? In the bible GOD days that he knew you before you were. why would GOD send his son to die on the cross for you and that he shed his blood for you to just waste it like it is nothing to you.And your probally thinking of all of these good questions about what I just posted, and its true and all that you have to do is ask Jesus Christ to come into your heart and forgive you of all of your sins so that you can be in heaven with me someday. Hoplfully when I die that I will see whoever reads this message in Heaven. Thank you so very much for taking time out of your day to hopefully become a beliver in Jesus Christ.

i think that walt whitman is a jerk for what he said about GOD almighty !!!!!!!! no ands ifs or buts about it.

  6. John says:

I think hes trying to say… no offense though.. that God did not create society, but we ourselves did because we all have a God in our soul, we created what is now today.

  7. Torrey Harris says:

I like this poem. It truly reveals the “god” in all of us. It also pays tribute to human life itself. It’s a small insight into the super-concious of everyone.

  8. Rahul says:

i think he is saying that you can be your own god, a highly contraversial thought during the time.
