The civil war, mexican war, and his witness of slavery influenced this
particular poem.

To me, this poem emphasizes the impossibility of a city built on love. He
"dreams" of one, and even in his utopian dream there is still the rest of
the world opposing it.

However, such a city would be invincible, as love conquers all.
