This poem is the essence of early America and what type of woman it took
for America to succeed. It describes and independent woman that can:
"...swim, row, strike, run,..." Take care of themselevs and their man if
neccessary. The women are also loyal to their respective husband and to
the cause of America succeding as a free nation.

This poem is the essence of Whitman: honesty. He is the most honest and
genuine writer I have ever read. The subject is sexual but treated
matter-of-factly like all of Whitman's subjects. He wrote about his
humaness.
