I looked here;
I looked there;
Nowhere could I see my love.
And — this time —
She was in my heart.
Truly, then, I have no complaint,
For though she be fair and fairer,
She is none so fair as she
In my heart.

  1. Shama T.Bukhari says:

    This poem by Stephen Crane is perhaps about his old love….he got married in England,and may be the poet was too close to someone in his homeland..as old love never dies and it never shows…that is real love and that never dies.

    I think this poem is about maybe a love he had in the past (perhaps she passed away) and he realized that he can find her only in his heart, and there she will stay. and he hasnt found another more fairer than she, the one in his heart.

  3. Shadowed says:

    I think that this poem is about his search for perfection and true love, and though he cannot find it, he is not sad because he has perfection and love in his heart. He was a dreamer and had very high standards and probably visions of some magical fairy-tale kind of true love. He set himself up for disappointment by having dreams, but because he dreams he doesn’t even realize that he is wasting away waiting for something to happen on its own, instead of working for it.

    I am almost positive the poet is speaking about how he can find no one that is quite to his standards. He is searching for this perfect soul mate but she is in only a figment or expectation that goes unfulfilled. However he does not feel at loss because his expectation exceeds the beauty of all real women.

    awww.. this was so sweet and the best one i have read so far!!!

  6. Jim says:

    If it is about two loves, from what I read previous about Stephen Crane is that he had no real true love but only that of his mother and sister. The information that i read could be wrong.

  7. Nalani says:

    I think this poem is talking about two different women this man loves. One he has looked for over and over again and the love he needed and wanted most was with him all along
