Crane is in a desperate situation and has lost all hope.He believes there
is somebody(God) out there who can help him.He cries out for help and he is
being comforted and given hope by a voice.he doesn't really believe his
conditions can change for better. He complains about everything being so
difficult. The voice points out the fact that there's still hope and he
should not give up.

Stephen Crane believed God existed, but Crane viewed God as hatefully. I
think that in this poem Crane is pointing out God's faults. The bible says
that God is always with you, but Crane does not feel God is with him. I
think this poem is trying to call God a liar

i have to agree with brian on this one... the man is unaware of the life
which he has created for himself.. when he finally becomes aware of his
situation he mistakes it for a desert, because in our minds we do not want
to accept that which is reality... this man's cry for help is not left
unanswered; instead, it is responded to with one short and vague phrase,
perhaps not only alluding to the idea that it has no one proper analysis
and meaning and that each individual will interpret it differently.. but
also simply pointing out the fact that "it", whatever "it" may be, is not a
desert...this man's perception of reality and the world around him is, more
or less, wrong and thus he shall remain lost and confused until he is
willing to accept his life for what it has become..

i think that crane is refering to the desert as hell and he is trying to
get through to the person that he is not in a desert but in hell.

Your life is what you make of it. He feels that is life is a barin
wasteland with no comfort but only through his own self pity or perhaps,
through ignorance of that fact, has he created such an environment for
himself. The voice telling him that it is no desert is simply trying to
point out that fact to him.

Im trying to figure this one out, but so far it seema that maybe the man is
lost and has no where to go. He is asking for help, but the person is
telling him that he is not lost. Maybe he is just thinking that he is lost,
not knowing that he is actually safe, maybe he made his own prison. Somewon
els put something i need more ideas.
