Stephen Crane is telling us that he has a thousand tongues, which probably
symbolize personalities. He is telling us that he has many personalities
and that they all lie. He tries to use the one that is true to himself, but
it doesn’t work, *dead* as he says. That is showing how he probably
conforms to society and shows them all the different things they want to
see that he never has time to use his other *tongue* and it later dies. As
it dies, it shows that he is basically dead to himself and can’t be real
and doesn’t know how to be himself or speak the truth because he had to
have so many other aliases. We all fight within ourselves and when we let
the fake parts control us then we lose ourselves and we die to us, and only
live to society.
i like this poem very much, it is very symbolic!

Hey Mike,
I dont think He's saying he Speakes a thousand languages, What he's saying
is that He Speaks, As in "a picture holds a thousand words", Same premes,
Just that he speaks And He cant seem to Make truth of what he speaks,
thought he tries. Thats my thoughts.

I rather like this poem in particular against the rest of his work that i
have read. He claims to speak 1000 languages and all but one lie. Lying
can come in MANY forms but truth can only come in one. hence the 999 lying
tongues and the one, singular one that speaks only truth...but is dead to
his mouth
