O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
Tomorrow’s wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.
The crows above the forest call;
Tomorrow they may form and go.
O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow.
Make the day seem to us less brief.
Hearts not averse to being beguiled,
Beguile us in the way you know.
Release one leaf at break of day;
At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away.
Retard the sun with gentle mist;
Enchant the land with amethyst.
Slow, slow!
For the grapes’ sake, if the were all,
Whose elaves already are burnt with frost,
Whose clustered fruit must else be lost–
For the grapes’ sake along the all.

    While studying Frost one day in 11th grade honors English I came across this poem and have loved it ever sence. It always reminded me of the place I called home though I have not been there for several years. It always brings me back to the forest behind my house where I would watch the leaves fall…
    Frost has a way of describing this season so that makes you feel warm inside instead of the cold chill one feels when the Autumn wind turns cold.
    His rhythem and meter expressed like a rolling brook.. It is smoth and unbroken.

  12. Horace Burtnik says:

    Many years ago, in a small country school we sang about
    October. I don’t remember more than two lines of it. It went like this: “October gave a party,
    The leaves by hundreds came . . . .”
    If anyone knows the rest of the poem, I would appreciate a note from you.

    Thanks,
    L. B.
