OH, give us pleasure in the flowers today;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orcahrd white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,
To which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends he will,
But which it only needs that we fulfill.

    I SENT THIS POEM TO A MALE COUSIN IN DENMARK DYING AT THE TIME WITH A BRAIN TUMOR (he had been an international pilot who trained in Boston). AT THE TIME I WAS VERY INTERESTED IN BUHDIST THINKING WHICH STRESSED LIVING IN THE MOMENT. I DON’T KNOW WHETHER IT HELPED HIM OR NOT, HOPE IT DID. I AM STILL IN CONTACT WITH HIS DAUGHTER IN DENMARK, WHO IS SOON TO BE MARRIED. (I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED MANY OF FROST’S POEMS- EVER SINCE DISCOVERING THEM AS A GIRL VACATIONING IN VERMONT- MANY REFLECTED MY OWN EXPERIENCE- ESP. “OUT THROUGH THE FIELDS AND THE WOODS
    ” I ALWAYS HATED TO HAVE SUMMER END AND NEEDING TO RETURN TO NYC. NOW, AT 81 YRS. HERE I AM LIVING WITH MY DAUGHTER IN VT- THOUGH NOT WELL ENUF TO DO ANY WALKING IN THE WOODS!

    This poem is lovely like others have said. It talks about the simple beauties in life that can give us pleasure. Also, I believe that since God created the earth, he put natural beauty in it for us to appreaciate and to respect how poewrful he is.

    This poem is awesome. I tells us to enjoy stuff while we have it and to enjoy life today and not worry what will happen tomorrow. Frost is great at expressing these statements!!

  13. matt says:

    This poem tells us that life is simple, and we need to enjoy it while we can because it is going to end. It also describes the wonders of god’s creations, especially the bees and the birds. Frost tells us to live life, and enjoy it while we can.

  14. John Moore says:

    Robert frost relates life to many things in this poem, he gives simplicity to the birds and the beas, and the teamwork that they portray to every day people in a personified way. It just goes to show that life really is that simple and all we have is our enjoyment of life. I like how his poem gives a different meaning towards the grand scheme of life in the end, we are just Gods creation.

  15. alex says:

    great poem

  16. whitney luise says:

    This poem speaks to my soul. It has a wonderful meaning that is saying we are given such wonderful things from God and that he knows when it will end,but we should enjoy it now. Frost wants to always have these wonderful things but knows that every good thing comes to an end, but he’s alright with it since God knows that master plan for life and the only thing a person can do is enjoy the simple pleasures of life until they are gone. Thank you
