it is an account of Lowell's stay in a mental hospital. he had begun
writing this during the weekend releases from the asylum. he talks about
his daughter that he leaves behind. the poem starts with "an inimical
nurse" and reference is to Ann Auden who was his muse at the Boston
Psychopathic, where they had first met. lowell is "cured" like lilies but
has lost his place in hierarchy and is now "frizzles, stale and small"
