Analysis and comments on Misgivings by Herman Melville

Comment 1 of 1, added on September 28th, 2005 at 2:22 PM.

I belong to a poetry reading group and the subject matter for our next
meeting is to read a poem and a selection of prose from an author who wrote
both prose and poetry.
I have chosen to read 'Misgivings' and Melvilles account of the typhoon
which struck the Pequad in Moby Dick (from the chapter entitled
'Candles').
The two compliment each other very well I think since they both deal with
the forces of nature and the former is so very topical to say the least.I
would be very interested to learn in what year Misgivings was written.Would
it have been after or during the Civil War? ("this nations ills")
I have to say that I had difficulty with the line'(Ah! optimist-cheer
dishartened flown) in the poem.
I had never seen this poem before or indeed any of Melvilles poetry until I
discovered your website, so thankyou.
