Herman Melville - Misgivings

When ocean-clouds over inland hills
Sweep storming in late autumn brown,
And horror the sodden valley fills,
And the spire falls crashing in the town,
I muse upon my country's ills--
The tempest burning from the waste of Time
On the world's fairest hope linked with man's foulest crime.

Nature's dark side is heeded now--
(Ah! optimist-cheer dishartened flown)--
A child may read the moody brow
Of yon black mountain lone.
With shouts the torrents down the gorges go,
And storms are formed behind the storms we feel:
The hemlock shakes in the rafter, the oak in the driving keel.

Misgivings - Comments and Information

Poet: Herman Melville
Poem: Misgivings

Comment 1 of 1, added on September 28th, 2005 at 2:22 PM.

I belong to a poetry reading group and the subject matter for our next meeting is to read a poem and a selection of prose from an author who wrote both prose and poetry.
I have chosen to read 'Misgivings' and Melvilles account of the typhoon which struck the Pequad in Moby Dick (from the chapter entitled 'Candles').
The two compliment each other very well I think since they both deal with the forces of nature and the former is so very topical to say the least.I would be very interested to learn in what year Misgivings was written.Would it have been after or during the Civil War? ("this nations ills")
I have to say that I had difficulty with the line'(Ah! optimist-cheer dishartened flown) in the poem.
I had never seen this poem before or indeed any of Melvilles poetry until I discovered your website, so thankyou.
