One of the best things you can do for yourself is to travel to
Boston/Cambridge and take a tour of Longfellow's house. When you immerse
youself in the tour from the US National Park Rangers and docents,
they will tell you about the house and also recite the poems Longfellow
wrote. When we toured the front hall, the ranger recited the Old Clock on
the Stairs. We stood there listening to the poem and looking at the
magnificent clock. It is on the first landing of the stairs to the second
floor and it is an ornate seventeenth-century Dutch clock. Longfellow's
poem reflects how he felt about it. It still stands in the same place
where Longfellow had it when he lived in the house.
It is just off the study that was Longfellow's and before that, in 1775-76
the study where George Washington planned the strategies for the
Revolutionary War. More inforamtion is in the book called The Longfellow
