I love this poem. I have a book of Edgar Allan Poe's complete works and
this is where I first noticed it. I read this poem at my Father's Funeral
after I gave the eulogy, never knowing that the title of the poem was The
Day is Done or who actually wrote it. How fitting to read a poem with such
a title for such an event. I am only finding out just now because I have
to read a poem for my World Lit class and that poem is now near and dear to
me, of course that is the one that I will be reading!

This was the first recital I had to make at Declamation at Williston
Academy in 1944 before the whole school. It was not my first acquaintance
with Longellow, whom I had learned two years before was a kinsman through
my ancestors John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. Also, I had previously been
assigned to read "The Courtship of Miles Standish" as well as "Hiawatha"
and "Evangeline." Without question "The Day Is Done" is my favorite poem
although three opf his epic poems "The Courtship of Miles Standish", "The
Miodnight Ride of Paul Revere." and "Evangeline" rank very high with
me.

As a youngster growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the mid 1950's, there
was a local radio station that closed their broadcasting day with the first
verse of this poignant peom. I has stayed with me all of these years and by
chance came across the complete poem on this site. I could not state my
feelings any better than the individual who posted the comments on October

There is a wonderful piece of music set to Longfellows text. The song is
called "And the Night Shall Be Filled With Music" by Greg Gilpin. Heritage
Choral Series is the publisher.

How wonderful to come across this work of Longfellow after so many years.
I memorized this for a drama class in 7th grade, and am glad for the
reintroduction. It spoke soothingly to me then and now.

I must say this poem is quite spectacular, I am only fifteen years of age
and I read this poem for school out of my literatue text book, and it even
though I might not have as many years of experience as everyone else
commenting on this site I feel that this poem has definitely touched me in
some sort of way. Anyone who thinks poety is a waste of time, should think
about what they're actually saying.

I heard a stanza from this poem while watching a movie titled Last Chance.
Both the words from the poem and the movie moved me. There was beauty in
the words, and the way it which they was spoken by the actor. I look
forward to reading the full poem in all its beauty.

I really liked this poem. its so peaceful and serene it makes me want to
lie down and rest. I can really relate also because i am really tired
during the day and it feels so nice to snuggle in bed at the end of the
day.
