I been scared and battered.
My hopes the wind done scattered.
Snow has friz me,
Sun has baked me,

Looks like between ’em they done
Tried to make me

Stop laughin’, stop lovin’, stop livin’–
But I don’t care!
I’m still here!

I loved the poem and i think the power of mind in Langston cant stop me think of ever existential of a person, being born, live, and die is the mark of a persons existence and no matter what that will never diminish whether subjected to pain, joys, of this world or off down into graves one remains unique and thatr is an undiniable fact. Each person marks a history as long as one comes and leaves the face of the Earth. Yap Hughes is simply a smart Poet i lhave come to enjoy reading!-Augustine

The first line of the poem should read “scarred and battered.” At least, that’s how it’s put on Mykee Fowlin’s website. Makes sense. Just thought you’d want to know.

I’m only 15 and in a few months I will be 16. This poem makes me appriciate that I am still alive. The older that I get the more I notice the world around me. Like a robin perched on a branch or a spider web glistening after a light shower. Since I am still here I respect most of what is around me but not all the time. Live, Love, Laugh, and Praise the Lord.

  19. Willow says:

I remember the week before 2000. Everyone was afraid that the world was going to end. But it’s not like that becuase the human race is a race full of survivors. One of them being hughes. Poets are survivors beucase a lot of them were different. They had the strength to keep doing what they love. And that is why we are still here. We ARE still here becuase of creativity, imagination, strength, and love.
