as an avant garde (and a feminist) imagist writer, hilda doolittle wrote of
things as she saw them...she rebelled against sameness and boredom when she
wrote "every footpath leads to the hillcrest then you retrace your steps or
find the same slope on the other side"...she longs for freedom from the so
called norm and doesn't want a life like the "perfect" pear that's picked
before it ripens which may be lovely to look at but has no
"strength"...she's willing to fight and struggle in order to feel
alive...it seems she marched to the tune of a different drummer in many
ways but from her writings i feel that she never quite found the right tune
that would give her the freedom she was searching for...what she didn't
know is that not many can...

I like how It reflects that beauty is in the eye of the beholder yeah dat

I love this poem. I went to H.D.'s gravesite on a field trip with my
college professor. We each read a poem and placed a token on her grave. I
read "Sheltered Garden." The second stanza reminds me of the cemetery where
her grave is located - Nisky Hills in Bethlehem, PA. This poem is so
beautiful. It reflects that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the
beholder should find beauty in everything, not just in the fragile,
external beauty of things.
