Liebster, dich zu berühren, ist es zu spät?
Augenblicke, da wussten wir – –
Liebe wie Erde, Liebe wie Meer – –
Himmlische Liebe, auch sie – –
Ist es, dich zu berühren, zu spät?
Damals wussten wir beide–
Meeres Liebe und irdische Liebe–
Himmels Liebe war uns gewiss–
By translating this poem into German (German is my native language), I was able to approach its secret which Emily Dickinson expresses in her inimitably simple words that try to reach for the unspeakable.
Love, here, is seen as a never-too-late moment of perennial presence, overcoming doubt and anxious questioning (first verse of the poem) and knowing that it is anchored both in this world and in the world beyond.
