If recollecting were forgetting,
Then I remember not;
And if forgetting ,recollecting,
How near I had forgot!
And if to miss were merry,
And if to mourn were gay,
How very blithe the fingers,
That gathered these today!

since i saw this poem...i was too ecstatic reading this...but then i can't get the true meaning until we tackle this poem to my english class... in peers...by then i truely get the meaning which is.."the heart will let go first before the mind"....which sometimes we don't agree..coz what they said...the brain is higher than our heart therefore the brain must control our feeling..we all have difference perspective of life...therefore we all have different belief in life....i love the all the poems of EMILY DICKINSON......
this also reflects on emily's love life...try to search her background and you will understand her poems in life.....
this poem is so touching...we can't forget someone who really marked on our life

I think almost everyone can identify with this poem. And when you read it, you picture the person. Emily Dickinson was trying to forget the pain, but in the poem, she reminds us of our pain too. I love this poem!
