"A great hope fell" does not appear in the online edition of the
Todd/Higginson edition at Bartleby's. I came across it in the Dell-Laurel
Poetry Series Dickinson collection, as number 101, where the Carpenter is
not "tender" at all, but "sovereigh," and instead of troughs "there is room
beside." The addition of room to a wound already large enough to contain a
life is more Dickinsonian than "troughs," the way it startles. And room is
one of her favorite metaphors. "And so as kinsmen met a night/ We spoke
from room to room..."
