Emily Dickinson - A Clock stopped

A Clock stopped --
Not the Mantel's --
Geneva's farthest skill
Can't put the puppet bowing --
That just now dangled still --

An awe came on the Trinket!
The Figures hunched, with pain --
Then quivered out of Decimals --
Into Degreeless Noon --

It will not stir for Doctors --
This Pendulum of snow --
This Shopman importunes it --
While cool -- concernless No --

Nods from the Gilded pointers --
Nods from the Seconds slim --
Decades of Arrogance between
The Dial life --
And Him --

A person dies, seen as the stopping of a clock.

An amazing poem written with absolute care in the choice and placement of words. Notice that there are 37 words before "Noon" and exactly as many afterwards. What a genius!

This poem is very relevant to me as my father was involved in clock making and repair. As a metaphor the use of the puppet and the clock as symbols of life and death are marvellous. I have this poem printed out and stuck on the wall and have spent some time looking at the beauty of its formation.
