poem
i think this poem is a little hard to understand at first but when one
looks further at the meaning of it then you really appreciate the central
themes

I chose to comment this poem because for one this is one of my favorite
poems by Emily Dikinson. And for two it shows great anguish and grieve, it
makes you feel as though you can feel what she is experiencing at this
point in her life. You take a walk in her shoes as she shows the imagery
and metaphors to explain the unhappiness in her life. Emily was a very
strong women to have written all these hellish poems. I especially enjoy at
the end "Birds, by the snow." Showing that she feels alone and left behind
as everyone she knew and love were passing. I can relate to this poem
deeply, when I first read it I knew right at the dot what she was talking
about. "You don't know what you got till it's gone."
B.T.W. All of Emily Dickinson's poems were published in their original
format in 1955 so thats probally where the 1955 came from.

She is showing a comparrison of words and meanings. In a sort of way..
Water is taught by thirst. meaning when you get thirsty you learn that
water will quinch or satisfy that yearning of thirst..
Peace.... by it's battles told. Means that one would not thirst for peace
if one had not aquired the thirst of the battle... She is compaing Land to
ocean as she says they are opposites is what makes them what they are. The
same as with the bird and snow...If you do not have snow you do not thirst
for the times when the bird sings in spring...
She is describing her feelings of of love by memorial mold... this was
probably written when she lost her parents and friends in those
years...Because love is gone as they are too in death...As the bird suffers
to survive in the snow, she too is alone....feeling so lost and cold....

This is a very poignant poem, but more than likely written in 1855 and not
1955, as Emily died in 1886.
