In the Era in which cummings wrote,Death was referred to as God's gardener,
a tender of souls. You can find many references in children's tales around
that time.

This poem is about care-free, unaware life that is about to get cut short,
just like the flowers that are being picked at her hand.

i don't think that's the point of this poem. i think the reason the second
person's eyes are "a little sorry" is probably because the first person was
just enjoying the field of flowers there first, alone. i don't know if he's
making a statement about killing flowers. *shrug* just my take.

why do we pick the flowers from their beauty?
cummings says that people realize the guilt that we are responsible for
bearing but if we desire something enough then we will pick all of our
flowers to get it. cummings could also be saying that people pick flowers
as a way to show respect to them. he may be saying that keeping the flower
for ourselves is the only way we know how to show recognition.
one must realize though, that in this process of picking flowers we also
kill them.
is virtue what leads us toward death?
