Natalie Merchant has put this beautiful poem to music in her extraordinary
album "Leave your Sleep". Well worth a listen.

maggie and millie and molly and may

Learned of this poem when i was a little girl and it always seemed a little
sad to me. Given the environmental desaster of the gusher in our Gulf,
this poem has another layer of meaning and makes me even more sad when i
read it today.

Whatever they find at the beach, is what they become later in life.. they
find their true self-- hence its always ourselves we find in the sea
It also demonstrates how the beach is a sanctuary, calming and a place to
go when you have troubles
