Carl Sandburg, in this poem used the bare truth of the hardships of being a
colored immigrant living among the so called, "white upper-class". Although
it's hard living in the opposition of an utopia the message that was to be
learned it seems is that no matter how hard or tough life may seem, there
is always hope if there is faith. It seems that Carl Sandburg discouraged
racism in his days, and this was one way how he shows the world the
hardships.

i think that if he was ever put into slavery he wouldn't write about this
kind of things. he wouldn't have called it this name either.

Renisha said:
"were you ever shackled and chained?
did you ever cry tears of dust wishing to go back to your motherland?
have you ever tried to keep the little of your mind that managed to escape
the demons of slavery?
Where you ever beaten and whipped?
Did you ever battle between running away from the slaveholder the only
life
you know of depended on or finally claiming your freedom and humanity?
Man, you never went through anything like that! Ever!"

For one, Renisha, neither have you.
Second, you are an idiot if you cannot see deeper into this poem. It's true
that Sandburg uses stereotypes in his sympathy toward blacks, but he is not
insulting african americans. Please read further into the poem before you
humiliate yourself next time.
