i don't really see how that poem is one of her best. i read that it was,
which is why i came to read it. disappointment.

i cannot believe this poem hasn't been commented on at all - it was one of
Sextons' finest. She worked on it for months, aparently. It's an attempt to
understand the particularly strange relationships with the women of her
life, focusing on how a daughter seperates from her mother - the young one
breaking free and the old woman left to wither alone. Oddly enough, the
inspiration for this poem came from the fact that Sextons' mother had a
portrait painted or herself and another of her daughter, and hung them so
that they were facing each other. Hence, 'The Double Image'.
